Toddler YoYo Sewing Tutorial

This DIY Toddler toy gift is the perfect beginner hand-sewing tutorial. Make a simple stuffed felt disc embellished with sewn yo-yos! #sewing #crafts #beginnersewing #handsewing #embroidery #diygifts #yoyo

This easy sewing craft makes a wonderful DIY toy for toddlers and preschoolers! The fascination of a bouncy yo-yo is usually frustrated by the difficulty for tiny arms. This toddler toy is a soft plush that is weighted by beans and bounces on an elastic string. The perfect DIY toy for summer boredom, birthdays, or Christmas stockings!

There's a soft spot in my heart for sewing. My first craft I ever really loved, I spent half of my high school career taking fashion design classes and thinking I'd get my degree in the domestic art.

Convinced otherwise by the disappointment of family and teachers, I focused on science and lingual degrees in college, only to find myself with my own business as an artist some 10 years later!

Hand sewing is one of my relaxation techniques, along with needle-felting and exercise. The "slow sewing" movement is important to me, because sewing on a machine can be so costly and intimidating (not to mention frustrating if something is going wrong). Hand sewing tutorials teach people how to become comfortable with a needle and thread, and gives you practice to use those skills in practical ways.

Shirt missing a button? Rip in your jeans? Your boobs blew up while pregnant, and now you have to let out your blouses?

Mending by hand is the answer, and only takes a small sewing kit.

The accomplishment felt at finishing a small project is also deeply gratifying! Holding something and saying, "Wow, I made that!" is an addictive experience!

If you're new to hand sewing--or old fashioned designs--there's a play on words with this tutorial! Yoyo art is a folk art that reached peak popularity in the US around the 1930s.

Easy ways to use every little scrap of everything were popular in the frugal era, and many quilters and housewives embellished quilts, coverlets, laundry bags, and even clothing with these simple little rosettes.

I personally love them! They are easy and fun to make and adorable when used properly.

While watching my 2 year old play, he was getting frustrated with my husband's toy yo-yo my grandmother gave him as a gag Christmas gift.

The winding of the string--not to mention his tiny t-Rex arms--did nothing but frustrate him.

Inspiration struck to create a bouncy, soft yo-yo decorated with my beloved rosette yo-yos! I whipped up two, one for each of my boys, and they love them!

This is a completely hand-sewn project, no need for a fancy machine here, and is perfect for beginners or children learning to sew.

You'll Need:

To Make the Yo-yo Embellishments
To start, trace two circles with your CD into the cotton fabric and cut them out with shears. Thread your needle and make a knot (watch this video tutorial for knots and all of the stitches involved in this tutorial--whip, running, and blanket stitch).

Fold a small edge of the first circle over and run the needle through the crease to hide the knot.

Sew a running stitch all the way around your circle in small sections, slightly pulling the fabric to bunch it as you work.

Once finished, sew back through the crease of the fabric and tie a knot, so that it is hidden in the crease.

You're finished with your first yo-yo! Make your second one, then trace a slightly larger circle than your yo-yo on the wool sheet.

How to assemble your toddler yo-yo toy:

Pin or hold your yo-yo rosette to one of the felt circles.

Thread and knot your needle and pass the needle through the back of the felt and into the back of the yo-yo, coming out between the layers of the rosette fabric.

Sew another running stitch just between these layers, so the thread is hidden from the front of the yo-yo.

Once finished, knot your stitch and make the second half of the toy yo-yo.

Place the two undersides of the yo-yo toy together and run a blanket stitch (here is a video tutorial for blanket stitch) around half of your toy and stop.

Tie a small (I used about 5 inches total of elastic string) knot around both buttons/beads, then secured the knots with a dab of hot glue.

To secure your interior bead or button to the side of the yo-yo toy, I used hot glue,  it you can stitch it if you don't have one. Just make sure to securely attach it, because toddlers are great at destroying things!

Once the glue is cooled, use a small piece of tape to secure some dry beans in a tiny plastic bag or ball of plastic wrap and use this to "stuff" your toy.

Then, finish your blanket stitch around the edge and tie your knot between the layers of fabric to hide it.

Your toy is finished!

I made a fabric yo-yo for my oldest a few years ago with my sewing machine and no embellishments for a frugal stocking stuffer. He loved it! Then our dog ate it, so I'd been meaning to make him a new one, plus one for my youngest. They both love swinging them around and bouncing them at each other!

**As always with small and homemade toys, make sure to supervise your children when they're playing with these.

I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial! If you make one, remember to tag me on Instagram @cinderellasews or add a photo to the "tried it" tab on Pinterest! I'd love to see your handiwork and repost it to show off!

Narwhal Sew a Softie Pattern

This narwhal softie is an easy beginner sewing project for adults and children alike! Non-fraying wool felt and a few simple stitches will give you a cute project and sweet toy to treasure.

I've always had a soft-spot in my heart for the "unicorn of the sea." Narwhals are mysterious, beautiful creatures steeped in lore and loved by all unicorn fanatics (myself included). The Last Unicorn was easily one of my favorite movies as a girl, and that affection has not waned since!

With this life-long love interest, you can imagine my girlish squeal when helping my 2 year old son open Christmas presents to see that his aunt had bought him a copy of "Not Quite Narwhal" by Jesse Sima.

A fantastic--and very sweet--tale of a unicorn born to a family of narwhals in the ocean. He knows he's different from the moment he's born, because he doesn't quite fit in with other narwhals--although they love him all the same. One day a strong currant sweeps Kelp into an adven…

Sally Halloween Sewing Project Free Pattern

Inspired by our family's favorite Halloween movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas," I decided to offer a little softie pattern to make my favorite character "Sally" into a bean-bag, ornament, or pincushion. October is the Halloween-themed "Sew a Softie" month blog hop, so I thought I'd get a jump on the tutorial!

Certainly the wisest and most caring character in Halloweentown, she is also an adept seamstress and generally crafty in all of her endeavors of the movie. Relating to her on a pretty intense level (I mean she's also a gardener, how can she not be my Halloween spirit animal?!), she served as inspiration for my actual costume a few years ago.

Despite being raised in a super intense religious community as a child (we weren't allowed to celebrate Halloween until I was 14 and any movie containing witches, or the like, was "the devil's influence"), I love the holiday as an adult!
