Beginner Quilting: How to Make a Hexie

Beginner English Paper Piecing tutorial of how to sew hexies! This video tutorial and free pattern is the first step in my beginner quilting series where we will be making a cute, hexie flower mug rug! #quilting #sewing #handsewing #epp #englishpaperpiecing #quilts #sewingproject #sewingpattern

If you follow any other sewing blogs or have been stalking the sewing community of Instagram, you may have seen some adorable designs made from hexagonal tiles of fabric. These are known as hexies in the quilting word and they are absolutely addictive to make!

I’ve been working on my first ever hexie project featuring 4 hexie “flowers” to go in the corners of a mini quilt, centering around my Cinderella Glass Slipper Embroidery Pattern. They have been sew fun to make—especially while joining the #sipteaandepp party on Insta!

For those who don’t know “epp” stands for “English paper piecing.” This quilting technique involves cutting and sewing blocks and tiles of fabric around small paper (or more modernly, acrylic) tiles to create exact edges in quilting together shaped designs.

It’s a fun technique and very relaxing, since it’s repetitive, small, and can be taken anywhere (I’m going to plug right here, that my Cinderella Satchels are perfect for carrying a small sewing kit, precut fabric and hexie templates! You can find ones I’ve made or make your own with the downloadable pattern and tutorial in my 5-Star rated Etsy shop ๐Ÿงก).

The sewing style is a fairly simple motion and just takes practice to get fast! I decided on a video tutorial for teaching you how to make these. It’s real-time with no speed added and takes only 5 minutes. This technique is considered stitch basting (some people use glue-basting to save time. I may venture into that when I get more ambitious with big projects, but for now, I enjoy the small stitches).

Over the course of the next few tutorials, I’ll be showing you how to make a hexie flower mug rug! This is the first step, so make 7 hexies and next week, we’ll talk about sewing them together to make a flower ๐ŸŒธ I’m using some lovely Little Red in The Woods fabric from Riley Blake Designs in this tutorial.

I tend toward vintage or Parisian pastel prints or woodland and fairy tale fabrics (if you haven’t figured that out yet ๐Ÿ˜‚). I find fabric from other Etsy sellers, Instagram buddies, Modes4U (they have Japanese kawaii fabrics, fairytale, children’s, and a lot of other designs that are hard to find in craft stores and with this link you get international free shipping with certain purchases), and Connecting Threads (which features quilting collections and more traditional prints).

Be sure to print out your free hexies pattern here before starting your tutorial. When printing, click “fill page” or the equivalent for your computer, to get the most accurate size in you template.

DIY Hamster Bed Pouch

This hamster pouch makes the perfect burrow bedding for any rodent friend! It is a wonderful DIY pet project that can be made by hand-sewing stitches, or with a sewing machine, and your fur baby will much appreciate the love.

When I was a kid, my sister and I went through a hamster stage. We saved up money from birthdays and chores and bake sales, and bought ourselves a pair of baby dwarf hamsters.

They were adorable and fun for about a week--then horrible.

They were difficult to catch, bit us all the time, and smelled GAWD-awful.

After a while, they escaped their (very nice) cage we made for them, and either perished or made their way outside our house and got lost in the woods. Now, before you think this is a sad story--my love has been utterly renewed for the hamster species.

A few months ago, my mother--who is a real estate agent--went to help another agent clear out a rental house that had been vacated after some unsavory tenants left in the middle of the night.

Suffice to say, the sit…

Sally Halloween Sewing Project Free Pattern

Inspired by our family's favorite Halloween movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas," I decided to offer a little softie pattern to make my favorite character "Sally" into a bean-bag, ornament, or pincushion. October is the Halloween-themed "Sew a Softie" month blog hop, so I thought I'd get a jump on the tutorial!

Certainly the wisest and most caring character in Halloweentown, she is also an adept seamstress and generally crafty in all of her endeavors of the movie. Relating to her on a pretty intense level (I mean she's also a gardener, how can she not be my Halloween spirit animal?!), she served as inspiration for my actual costume a few years ago.

Despite being raised in a super intense religious community as a child (we weren't allowed to celebrate Halloween until I was 14 and any movie containing witches, or the like, was "the devil's influence"), I love the holiday as an adult!

Making costumes, free candy, decorating …
