The Ancient Greek story of Artemis and Actaeon is one of my favorites. This hand embroidered bookmark was inspired by the story of the hunter becoming the hunted and a goddess’s retribution.

Price: $45

A grisly tale of a hunter who spies on the goddess Artemis, bathing under a waterfall with her nymphs. Upon seeing the voyeur, the goddess “cloaked in her wild fury” transforms the fleeing hunter into a stag—which his own hunting dogs then chase and eventually devour.

The path between the civilized, man made world, and the wilds is always very thin. Our inherent desire to both be of the wild—but also part of human community—is fascinatingly explored by many ancient folktales. As if we can accidentally stumble into the wild—like Acteon—and upset some natural balance of the world is a timely story worth examining during modern times of natural destruction.

Deforestation, extinctions, and massive social and climatic change means the story of Artemis and Actaeon is an excellent tale of “know your place.” Not to mention that you should never be presumptuous with a woman 😉 The bookmark itself is features a subtle woodland print on a dark forest green.

The paths were cut from an upcycled linen and cotton blouse, then stitched with "dried grass" on the edges. Central to the story and bookmark is Artemis, the goddess of the moon, the hunt, and protector of children—illustrated by the bow and arrow and crescent moon.

Actaeon's journey from hunting to hunted is represented by the deer antlers and snarling dog on opposite ends of the bookmark, symbolizing the story’s moral of “know your place” they are positioned closest to the larger roads that are closer to human civilization.

Whereas Artemis is found at the end of all roads, in the middle of the wild. The tassel is handmade from a very soft—minky style yarn and finished off with a cute brass squirrel charm. It measures 6.5 inches tall (not counting the tassel) and 3 inches wide.

Your bookmark will arrive gift-wrapped in a little bag with a few teeny “thank you” goodies!
